Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?+
In most Alberta municipalities, retaining walls over 4 ft tall require a building permit and engineer-stamped drawings. We handle all permits and engineering coordination — included in our proposal.
What is the best material for a retaining wall?+
It depends on your aesthetic, budget, and engineering needs. Armour stone is most premium and natural. Allan Block is most cost-effective for taller walls. Custom concrete suits modern architecture. We bring samples to your consultation.
How long do retaining walls last?+
A properly engineered and constructed retaining wall lasts 30-50+ years. Cheaper installations using stacked landscape blocks without proper base, drainage, and geogrid often fail within 5-10 years. We never cut corners on these critical hidden elements.
How much do retaining walls cost?+
Pricing varies by height, material, and complexity. As a guideline: garden walls (under 3 ft) run $80-150/linear ft, mid-height walls $150-300/linear ft, engineered tall walls $300-600+/linear ft. We provide fixed pricing in our proposal.
How do you handle drainage behind the wall?+
Every wall over 2 ft includes a perforated drain tile at the base, draining to daylight or storm system. We use clean crushed stone backfill (not soil) for the first 12" behind the wall. Drainage failure is the #1 cause of wall failure — we never skip this.
Can you tie the wall design into other landscape work?+
Absolutely — that's our specialty. Walls work best when integrated with paver patios, plantings, lighting, and irrigation as one cohesive design. We can phase the work or do it all at once.
