The Studio Approach

Fences as architecture, not just boundary.

We design fences as architectural elements that integrate with your home and landscape, using premium materials and concrete-set posts engineered for Alberta heave.

FAQ

Fence Builders questions, answered.

The most common questions our clients ask. Need more info? Reach out — we're glad to talk.

What is the best fence material for Edmonton's climate?+

Western red cedar handles freeze-thaw beautifully with proper sealing. Vinyl is the most maintenance-free option. Composite and aluminium are the best for true 'set and forget' performance. We'll recommend based on your priorities — durability, look, or maintenance.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Edmonton?+

Fences under 6 ft typically don't require permits in Edmonton residential zones, but you should verify with your municipality. Fences on corner lots or near sight lines have additional rules. We handle permit research as part of your project.

How deep should fence posts go?+

In Alberta, fence posts must be set in concrete below the frost line — minimum 3 ft (typically we install at 4 ft for premium projects). Anything less and posts will heave with the freeze-thaw cycle within 2-3 winters.

How long does a fence installation take?+

Most residential fence projects (100-300 linear ft) take 3-7 working days from start to finish. Custom builds, painted finishes, or complex sites can extend the timeline. We provide an exact schedule with the proposal.

What about my neighbour — do they need to approve?+

If the fence sits exactly on the property line, having your neighbour's agreement (and ideally cost-sharing) is best practice. If the fence sits entirely on your side of the line, you don't need their approval — but we always recommend a courtesy heads-up.

Do you stain or paint the fence after install?+

Yes — staining/sealing is included for cedar and wood fences (one coat of premium UV-protective stain). Vinyl, composite, and aluminium come pre-finished. We recommend re-staining cedar every 3-4 years to maximize life.
